How To Style Overalls And Not Look Like A Child

Summer has come to an end for most, but with temperatures high in the 80s here in the DC region this weekend, I pulled out these denim overalls for one last wear in the heat.  I believe that overalls fall into two fashion categories for women.  Either you hate it, or you love it!  No in between.

This love-hate relationship with overalls may be due to the fact that as grown women, we simply do not want to rock items that may make us feel like we are in 3rd grade, or make us look (unintentionally) like we walked off a farm.  I have to admit that styling this overall isn’t easy, but once you have figured out the right shirt, shoes and accessories, you can definitely look polished and chic.

Here are a few style tips to help you look great in denim overalls:

  1.  Pairing your denim overalls with stripes is guaranteed to make you look great.
  2.  Fit is key.  A lot of overalls have adjustable straps, making it easier to tailor them to your body, also avoiding the gapping in the crotch area.  The slimmer fits are amazing for most body types, especially for curvy women.  If you are slim, you can pull off the baggier style.
  3.  During the fall or winter months, you can easily add a blazer, jacket, vest or opened button down shirt.  This little trick will help you stay warm of course, but also adds sophistication to the look.
  4. Accessorize.  To avoid looking like a toddler in overalls, definitely play around with accessories and choose wisely depending on the type of look you’re going for.  Structured bags, fun necklace or statement earrings, can add the right touch of feminine details.

I thrifted these shorts overalls during a huge consignment sale here in Annapolis last winter.  She-Sale Consignment is a seasonal event, happening once in the winter and once in the spring. During this multi-day (5 days) event they sell women and junior clothing and home decor and furniture.  The prices are absolutely on point, and best of all, each day after the grand opening, most items are discounted by 25%.  They host the event in a large recreation center.  Items are neatly hung, there are available dressing rooms to try items on, and best of all for me, it was very organized.  Clothing were separated by sizes and types, shoes by sizes.  I went on the first day, and the last day when all items that I bought were 50% off.  If you are Annapolis during October 2017, you should absolutely check this event.  They also run Wee-Sale Consignment, which is seasonal as well, focusing on children clothing and toys.

As I said before, I found these overall shorts at this consignment sale, and paid only $3 during the 50% off day.  I have always wanted a pair, but simply did not feel like I needed it that badly to pay the retail price of $39.  Yes, I know.  You are saying to yourself that $40 is not an arm an a leg for this item. But honestly, unless I desperately want them, I tend to practice the art of patience and wait until I thrift things at a sweet price.

I paired this with this striped print shirt with ruffle sleeves.  I found this little number on Sheinside for $18.  I have purchased items from Sheinside before, and in another blog post, I will talk about the best tips to getting pieces that actually fit, and are of somewhat good quality.  Let’s be real however, Sheinside is not the place to get your investment pieces, nor pieces designed to last you many seasons.  If you are looking to add a couple of trendy pieces to your wardrobe without spending too much, then you should really check them out.

These sandals are one of my faves!  I thrifted these Chloe tribal crochet T-strap sandals from a consignment shop in Greenwich Village in New York City a couple of summers ago.  If you know your designer labels, then you should probably know that these sandals retail over $450.  As a birthday present to myself, I splurged when I bought these, and paid $115.  The savings on this designer pair is incredible, although I realize that not everyone will pay even my discounted price for a pair of sandals.  However, I have to say that these are one of my favorite pair of sandals, and I always get a ton of compliments whenever I wear them.  I added these sandals to this ensemble to create that polished look.

Finally I completed the look with this beautiful leather Michael Kors handbag, some simple accessories, and was ready for a day out and about enjoying the last of summer 2017!  Although, I would say that adding some tights in the colder months, with some booties is certainly an option to getting some more wear out of these overalls.
