I love this “skirt look” although it’s a tulle dress. I have been searching in every thrift and consignment shop for a tulle skirt. It is has been a constant on my thrift wish list for several months now.
Of course, I can easily buy this type of skirt at most retail stores, but you guys know that I am about the savings! I refuse to pay a lot of money for an item where the actual material is really quite cheap. If I could only sew, I can probably make about ten tulle skirts for about $20. Might be exaggerating there, but seriously, tulle itself is very cheap!
This weekend however, as I was going through my closet in preparation of my upcoming fashion exchange, I came across this dress that I had thrifted from Buffalo Exchange for $8.00 several months ago. I had not worn the dress yet because it is a spaghetti strap dress. I have nothing against spaghetti straps, but it’s always a hassle for me to find the right undergarments. Read between the lines there :).
However, I realized that I had my skirt look if I added a shirt over it. I paired the cream colored tulle dress with this beautiful bright blue colored shirt from Sheinside.com on clearance for $9.99. The outfit felt just right once put together. Some awesome heels and great accessories, and I had completed the perfect “skirt look” using a dress!
Have you had any luck with converting a piece? If so, please share.

You looks so cute in this and isn’t it great that you thought about adding the shirt, it really jazzes up the dress and covers up what needs to be covered up. I can’t wait to see what you get at the fashion exchange.
Antoinette,
Thank you honey! Girl, sometimes we just need to cover it up! lol. Yes, I am really excited about the exchange as I have really gutted my closet.
I am loving this entire look! Perfection.

MaRae,
Thank you hun!!!!
I love how you used this dress and made it look like a skirt. I wish I knew how to sew too. I would love to be able to make clothes for myself and my kids. I also want to make curtains.
in LOVE with that skirt! I have been wanting a tulle skirt, but don’t want to add any extra bulk if you know what I mean haha. This is the perfect solution!

LOVE this look. I’ve never thought to pair a dress with a skirt like that. I’ve searched for a maxi length tulle skirt forever and just cannot find one. Maybe this is the route I’ll need to go.
This looks amazing on you! Such a innovative idea! I would have never thought of that.
THAT OUTFIT! I die. I love!
Deidre,
Hahaha, LOVE it. Thank you.
You are too cute! I have a light blue tulle skirt that I’m obsessed with these days – I love that you paired the dress with a shirt – perfect solution!
What a wonderful tulle dress – and a terrific idea to style it as a skirt! I need to try that more often with some of my dresses. Amazing nude pumps, too!
Jennie
Love the dress as a skirt trick! The colors in the top pair perfectly with the skirt and those heels are awesome!

That smile, perfect shots and the attitude you carry! Just perfect!
Lata,
Humbled by your compliments. Thank you so very much.
I just LOVE this. I love that you wore it as a skirt, it is absolutely perfect with the floral top!
Chelsea,
Thank you for the sweet compliment. I would love to find other items to pair with that floral top now.
Such a cute dress!
Andrea,
Thank you.
Whata gorgeous combination! Paring nude with a dark blue floral pattern with red, white and green is something I´d wear anytime. That is if I have your impressive thrifting skills and eclectic fashion sense of course! 😉

What a great outfit! I love the way you mixed the solid with the pattern, such a great choice!
Alyssa,
Thanks! I am really happy that it worked out the way it did. I now have some inspiration for a few more outfits.
Oh my gosh! You are gorgeous and your dress-skirt look is fabulous! I love that bright shirt and how you paired it with that dress. I would never have thought of that! Love it!
Rochelle,
Thank you!!!! It was the first time that I had paired a dress with a shirt like that, but I am definitely happy I did. I can probably save a few dresses that were heading out the door now. lol.
I LOVE that dress. And I love how you pulled it all together. You always look so stunning in your photos. 🙂
Jessica,
You are awfully sweet! Isn’t it amazing how a shirt and some heels can make an outfit!
I love this tulle skirt! I have been looking for one as well and never find one and don’t want to break the bank for one! I am hoping to find one on sale or clearance like you did!
Leanna,
There is never a need to break the bank on any clothes, my mantra. Keep an eye out for it though, because once you see it, you will need to move quickly. I think everyone has their eyes out for a tulle skirt these days. lol.
WOW Ayana I am in love with this look. Your blouse and shoes are gorgeous. Definitely pinning this one. =)
Ada,
You are too sweet! Thank you. The shoes I actually got on clearance for $12 from Macys. Can you believe that. They are I.N.C. brand and for that thrifty price, I was soooooo excited.
I absolutely love this! I love layering shirts over dresses, it opens up so many possibilities in my closet, haha!
Brooke,
Thanks girlie. Yes, I think the options are wide open when you can use a dress as a skirt now. I love it!
You look so cute. I’m so not fashionable and am always impressed by people who are.
Karissa,
Thank you! I think everyone has a fashionable sense of their own. It’s just a matter of adding the confidence to it.
Love thus look – the bright colored top is such a great compliment to the neutral skirt!
Jenn,
Thank you. Yes, I love the bright colors and knew that the neutral color skirt needed a little umph.
I have the same problem with spaghetti straps! I love the shirt you added, though, to make this look! So pretty!
Carly,
I am always envious though of others who pull the spaghetti straps off though. But, adding a shirt definitely made it much easier and comfortable to wear the dress/skirt.
Love the pairing. Great colors and I’m so impressed they were thrift finds. I was expecting it to be a super pricey showoff. Go you!
Michelle,
Lol at super pricey showoff. You will never find that on my blog. Can’t get myself to pay too much for clothing, shoes, accessories, actually anything in general!
Don’t get me started on undergarnments…
I have a maxi dress that I generally wear only with a shirt or tee on top because it has the racer back and I am not even remotely a fan of seeing bra on backside. I know, I know there are special bras for that now too. Anyway…
I think actually adding the shirt gives this skirt (dress) more oomph. And your earrings are gorgeous.
Alex – Funky Jungle
Alex,
Hahahah. Girl, I am right there with you. Not a fan of seeing bra straps on anything, or person. I also don’t know why I don’t just invest in a convertible bra — just laziness I think. Thanks for the compliment. I got the earrings at Charming Charlies. Not sure if you guys have one of those stores over there on your side of the world.
This skirt is absolutely perfect on you! I love the heels, too!
Jess,
Thank you girlie. The heels, although they look high, are quite comfortable and I wear them often.
That is the perfect way to make a dress into a skirt! I love hacks like this!
Raewyn,
Yes, it is indeed. I am about do a series as I am so excited to expand my closet with taking dresses to skirts. Thanks for stopping by.
I love what you did with this dress, it looks great on you, love finding a piece that can work two ways like this 🙂
Sarah,
Thanks! This was the first time I tried wearing a dress like a skirt, but I am absolutely about to start doing it more often.
