The romper is the jumpsuit’s little sister, and a classic summer fashion piece. If you agonize over putting outfits together, or simply a lazy fashionista, then rompers should be your new best friend during the summer, as this garment incorporates both the top and bottom in one piece. Whether you call it a playsuit or a romper, these ultra lightweight and super stylish summer statement pieces have become a fashion sensation.
Nowadays, rompers isn’t just for the kids and it definitely is no longer just for lounging poolside or walking on a beach summer. Many women are intimidated by rompers. However, I am telling you that you can pull one off, I promise. All you need is the right fitting romper, the right accessories, and the right confident attitude. It’s a fact that rompers can look chic, smart and sophisticated.
They are extremely easy, saving you the headache of choosing separates as it’s an all-over cover-up. All you need to do is pop it on and choose your shoes. Additionally, there are endless variations of rompers, which means there’s something for all shapes and sizes. I have to give the following disclaimer however. Not all rompers will fit every body type the same. To pull off an awesome romper, you must pick the style that’s right for you. Whether you are top or bottom heavy, pear, apple, or hourglass shape, picking the right romper is all about how to choose the right well fitting top and shorts at the same time.
Two key elements in finding the right romper is picking the right length and picking the right style for your shape. It’s important to find the fit in the rise (crotch), if your romper is meant to be tailored and formal. But if you are going for something looser, casual and a bit more oversized, then a drop crotch is acceptable. As for petite ladies, stick to fitted pieces only, since the oversize ones will only overwhelm your frame. While you can normally get away with wearing one size off in most clothing items, rompers are an entirely different story. Sizing up or down doesn’t necessarily add more (or less) length to the garment. So if you’re on the tall or petite side, look for options that come in those extended sizes.
In your search for the perfect romper, you will notice the obvious. Rompers are short. If you wanted a long playsuit, then opt for a jumpsuit. However, if you are not undeterred by the length, still keep in mind that you should keep your look classy. I love rompers because I have found various rompers that look great on me, and I have learned how to style a romper outside of simply adding shoes. I don’t listen to the naysayers regarding how difficult it is to go to the bathroom, or the fears of wedgies. We are all grown women, we could work those things out. However, when choosing a very short romper, I have found that I feel most comfortable adding a layer to the romper at times.
A fellow fashionista gifted me this sexy black romper. When your fellow stylish girlfriends purge their closets, it’s a great way of adding new pieces to your own closet without a price tag. Of course, I also return the favor by doing the same. I love the way this romper fits me. However since it has a low cut, and is pretty short, I needed a little coverage for a classy look. To the rescue, was this amazing printed duster/long shirt/dress. I thrifted this Express piece from a Goodwill in Palm Beach for $3.00 after military discount.
Honestly, what stood out for me about this piece was the amazing print. I still don’t know what exactly it is (dress, duster, long shirt), but I knew I love it. Indeed, it makes this short romper even more attractive.
Completing this look are these gorgeous nude Aldo’s fringe heels. These heels simply add that final touch of classiness to this romper outfit. The nude color allows the printed duster/long shirt/dress to shine along with the short romper.
What are your thoughts about wearing a romper?
I literally love this entire look!! I’ve never been much of a romper fan but this is incredibly stunning! I like that you found pieces while thrifting, just goes to show it doesn’t have to be brand new to be great!
Kimberly,
Thank you! What is scaring you about rompers? Yes, you don’t have to be brand new, and certainly you don’t have to pay a lot of money to look amazing.
I love this look! I have one romper, it’s more of a pantsuit and I never wear it because I hate having to strip to pee, but the look is always one of my favorites!
Angela,
Thank you! Go to the bathroom, and then wear it. Trust, if the look is one of your faves, you should be rocking it more.
VERY CLASSY!! This is the perfect way to wear a romper and not look like you should be poolside. You look ready for a night on the town, and I love it!
Pam,
Thank you!!!! I do love how the duster raises the level of sophistication in the outfit.
Rompers are awesome and it’s definitely all about the accessories if you want to make it look classy. I love how you styled this one, the kimono is a lovely addition to the outfit!
AnnMarie,
Thank you. I have always loved a nice romper, but adding the kimono is new for me and I love it.
I have always thought rompers would never work for me but I love that black one. It looks so sophisticated!
Carolyn,
Hopefully this blog post has inspired you, or changed your thinking that rompers are for only certain women.
You are truly a fashion diva!
Jamala,
Thank you. That means a lot coming from you.
I remember wearing and loving rompers in my younger days, but now I’m not so sure I could pull it off. I love the idea of adding a long cardigan or duster to make you feel more classy and chic. It would also help me feel less conscious out my short legs and super pale skin.
Cindy,
The cardigan or duster is definitely a great camouflage trick. I hope that you were inspired to think again of adding rompers back to the closet. It’s an unexpected fashionable piece. Simply having one adds some flair to your wardrobe.
You are so fabulous! I don’t know how to make romper look classy but there you are.. I love your fashion tips, simple clothes look better because of you.
Journa,
Thank you so very much for your kind words. I hope that I am inspiring you to try new looks and to step out to wear those simple clothes.
Those shoes are stunning! I love the fringe accent on the back of the heel.
Emily thank you. That fringe detail is really what got me to buy those heels. Also, since they are neutral, I wear them often.
Just beautiful! Would you believe I’ve never worn a romper before? I need to find one!
Thank you. I do believe that, but I hope after reading this blog post you would certainly try to find and add one to your closet.
I’m a tall lady – so finding a romper that fits is often tough. I have still yet to find one that fits me and loos good. Love the fringe heels!
I would agree with you that finding a romper for tall women are a little more difficult, but they are not impossible. Models rock rompers all the time, and look amazing. Please believe me that you can find a romper that looks amazing for your body.
You look fantastic. I love rompers but with my body type after 7 kids, I don’t think I could pull it off. I would love to try though, I love the look of them!
Jeanine,
Thank you. You look amazing for having 7 kids my dear. Just keep trying. There is a romper out there for everyone.
This is a great class AND sexy look! I wish I could pull that off! I may have to try it once i get my pre-baby body back!
